If your smart scale and DEXA report show different body-fat percentages, it does not automatically mean one result is broken. The two methods estimate body composition in different ways, so their numbers are not interchangeable.
How a smart scale estimates body composition
Many consumer smart scales use bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). A small electrical signal passes through the body, and the device combines the impedance reading with details such as height, weight, age, sex, and a built-in prediction equation to estimate body composition. Results can vary with the device and the equation it uses. Research reviews note that BIA accuracy depends in part on appropriate prediction equations and standardized measurement protocols.
How DEXA estimates body composition
A whole-body DEXA scan uses dual-energy X-rays and software to estimate fat mass, lean soft tissue, and bone mineral. Depending on the system and report, it can also provide regional results. DEXA is widely regarded as a gold-standard method for assessing body composition, but its output is still an estimate with limitations. It is not a perfect measurement and does not diagnose health conditions.
Why the numbers may not match
Each method has its own measurement approach, assumptions, software, and reference data. A smart scale may be useful for convenient, frequent tracking on the same device, while a DEXA scan provides a different kind of assessment and more regional detail. A value from one method should not be treated as a direct correction or conversion of the other.
Testing conditions can also influence measurements. Hydration and other day-to-day factors may affect a reading, and different devices may process information differently. This is why two results taken close together can still disagree without either one necessarily being broken.
A practical way to track progress
Choose a method that fits your goals, then compare like with like. For a DEXA trend, use the same scanner when possible and follow similar preparation instructions each time. For smart-scale trends, use the same scale in a consistent routine. Avoid treating a single reading as the whole story; look at the trend alongside your goals and other information that matters to you.
