A little preparation can make a DEXA appointment feel straightforward and make future comparisons more useful. The most important rule is simple: follow the instructions provided for your specific appointment. Scanner and provider protocols can differ, so general online advice should not override your scan instructions.

Before your appointment

BodyBlueprint Health will share preparation guidance before your visit. Read it in advance and contact the team if anything is unclear. The ISCD notes that consistent preparation, including clothing, time of day, physical activity, fasting state, and bladder status, can matter for precise body-composition measurements.

This does not mean you should invent a fasting or exercise rule for yourself. Follow the instructions for your appointment and avoid unusual changes just to affect a number. If you are pregnant or might be pregnant, do not schedule a body-composition DEXA scan until you have spoken with your healthcare professional. The ISCD lists pregnancy as a contraindication to DXA body composition.

During the scan

The scan is completed while you lie still as the scanner collects measurements. Follow the staff member’s directions for positioning. Consistent positioning is one reason repeat scans should be done on the same system when possible.

BodyBlueprint provides a mobile DEXA service in San Antonio and nearby listed communities, so a scan can take place at a planned local visit or group event rather than requiring a trip to a clinic-style facility. Learn more about how mobile DEXA scans work.

Making repeat results more useful

A scan is a snapshot, not a verdict. For a progress comparison, try to use the same scanner and similar preparation, clothing, timing, activity, and positioning each time, as your instructions allow. Do not compare measurements from different methods as if they were identical.

If your routine was different before a scan, mention it when reviewing the report so you can consider the context. Consistency can help make comparisons more meaningful, but no measurement should be treated as an exact or complete account of health.

BodyBlueprint Health provides printed and emailed results with a consultation to help explain the report. Learn more about mobile DEXA scans, repeat scans for progress tracking, and service areas. Contact us if you have a question before your appointment.
